Heed the warning - Star

Nov 7 - By SYLVIA LOOI

PERAK local councillors who misuse their positions for personal interest or are found guilty of criminal activities will be booted out immediately, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said.

“Do not force me to show you the door. We will not tolerate councillors who smear the state’s good name,” he said when opening a training seminar for the state’s 338 local councillors here on Wednesday.

“There is no room for councillors who use the councils for their vested interest,” he added.

Reminding the councillors of their responsibilities to the people, Nizar said they were chosen because the state believed they could deliver.

Later during a press conference, state Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming said a Gerik district councillor was under police investigation pertaining to his business enterprise but this was unrelated to the council.

“While the state will not compromise for any misbehaviour and abuse of power, the councillor is innocent until proven guilty,” he said, adding that the councillor would remain in the post pending the outcome of investigation.

He added that the performance of all appointed councillors was being evaluated.

“If they do not perform up to par, it is sayonara to them,” he said.

He added that if the state’s financial standing allowed it, the councillors’ allowance would be increased.
