IPOH: Sept 4, 2008
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has defended the decision to allocate 1,000ha of land to nine Chinese independent schools, saying the state government has always acted fairly towards everyone in the state, including the Malays.
"The state government is serious about resolving issues faced by various segments in the state for so many years," he said here yesterday.
He was commenting on the reactions of Umno and the party's Youth wing leaders in the state, which criticised him for sidelining the people's religious schools or sekolah agama rakyat (SAR).
Nizar said he believed that Umno leaders who had questioned the state government's decision were not aware that the administration had done a lot for the 18 SAR.
Nizar also took Umno Youth to task for portraying itself as a defender of the religious schools.
"Why is Perak Umno Youth suddenly so interested in fighting for the rights of SAR, when it was the Barisan Nasional government, under the premiership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which discontinued financial assistance to the religious schools, causing many of them to shut down?"
