SADDENED by the plight of the Sichuan earthquake victims, seven traders in Kampung Tawas, Ipoh, held a charity sale to raise funds for them.
For six hours from 7am on Sunday, they cheerfully served customers char kuey teow, chicken rice and other Ipoh favourites and donated the proceeds.
The group raised RM9,029.10 for Yayasan Sin Chew’s earthquake fund.
Hawker Wong Fut Mooi, 46, said the seven of them came up the idea after hearing about the tragedy.
“I normally open for business from 3pm to 9pm, but this is for a good cause,” she related while busy at her wok, cooking up another plate of fried meehoon.
“Sometimes, people would just come by, drop something into our donation box and leave without even staying for a meal. One lady gave RM70,” Wong added.
Her fellow traders sold hawker fare, newspapers and other sundries at their respective stalls at the village.
Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, who was also present, praised the traders for their initiative.
“Their efforts are a welcome addi-tion to the more than RM300,000 we received from the public. The DAP recently handed over the sum to the Chinese Embassy,” he said.
Also present was Bercham assemblyman Sum Cheok Leng
