IPOH: Tronoh assemblyman V. Sivakumar has declared that he is still the Perak State Assembly Speaker.
Responding to a Tamil daily which had reported he lost his post after the Barisan Nasional state government was sworn in, Sivakumar said: “Many people think I have lost the post. It is not true.”
“I was elected as the Speaker by a vote in the state assembly, and will only be relieved of my post the same way,” he said in a statement released here Friday.
Sivakumar said he would continue with his duties and responsibility as the state speaker and was still entitled to its executive council member’ privileges.
He added that he had created history by being the country’s first Indian state assembly speaker.
Meanwhile, Canning assemblyman Wong Kah Woh challenged Barisan Nasional to prove the legitimacy of the state government that was recently sworn in.
Wong, who is also state DAP publicity secretary, called on Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abd Kadir to point out which provisions under the Perak Constitution gave Barisan the right to form the state government.
“Dr Zambry and his ‘junta’ have sworn to preserve, uphold and defend the state constitution, but have proceeded to install themselves as the mentri besar and exco members in violation of said state constitution,” Wong told a press conference here Friday.
Wong said he lodged a complaint with Sivakumar, who heads the Committee of Special Privileges, on the matter on Thursday.
