KUALA LUMPUR: May 7, 2008
DAP chairman Karpal Singh said his statement that Sultan Azlan Shah did not have jurisdiction over the transfer of state government officers was not meant to insult the Sultan of Perak.
The MP for Bukit Gelugor said his comment was made purely from the legal point of view but had been politicised by Umno politicians.
“It’s a legal issue (but) politicians from Umno have turned it into a racial issue. I’m not against the Sultan. By no way I wanted to insult the Sultan of Perak or question his position,” he told reporters at the parliament lobby here today.
Last week, Sultan Azlan Shah ordered Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar to reinstate Perak Islamic Religious Department director Datuk Jamry Sury as the menteri besar had transferred Jamry without prior consent of the Sultan, who is the head of Islam in the state.
However, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said yesterday that the Sultan's directive was in line with the Federal and state constitutions and that Karpal's statement could invite anger among those who were defending the powers of the Sultan.
