IPOH, May 7 (Bernama)
The 817 village heads in Perak will no longer be given development projects and will only receive a RM200 monthly allowance each.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the small allowance and lack of projects would make the job appealing to only those who were sincere in serving the community.
"Previously, village heads were given development projects and could choose the contractors but now these projects will be carried out using other methods.
"Many people wanted the village head's job because of this, but now the concept is that it is a trust and not based on returns," he told reporters after chairing the state executive council (exco) meeting here Wednesday.
He said the village heads appointed would have to follow the decisions and implement policies of the coalition state government.
Under the Barisan Nasional (BN), Perak village heads each received a RM400 monthly allowance from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and RM200 monthly from the state government.
Mohammad Nizar said the exco meeting also decided that the Perak Land and Mines Office freeze immediately the issuance of titles to individuals or companies that had applied for areas opened up by others.
This was because the government found that there was discrimination and unfairness in the issuance of the land titles, he said.
