IPOH, THURS: May 15, 2008
The Perak government will contribute RM1 million in the form of rice, sugar and cooking oil supply for almost 5,000 hardcore poor families to lessen their burden following spiralling prices of goods.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said these families, including those headed by single mothers, would each receive 30kg rice, 5kg sugar, 2kg cooking oil and cash of RM100, within a week from tomorrow.
“The state government has taken this initiative as it is sensitive to the plight of the hardcore poor at this time of sudden price hikes. This is among the characteristics of a welfare state,” he told reporters here today.
He said the provision of aid was made based on the existing list of hardcore poor families in the state, that is, of those earning below RM420 monthly.
“The price hike of goods is a global phenomenon and so, no quarters should be blamed,” he added.
Mohammad Nizar urged the corporate and private sector, social institutions and non-governmental organisations, which are keen to help the poor in this difficult time, to channel their contributions via the state government and the monetary donations to be made out to the state government treasurer
